View Full Version : tosca - suzuki

sg[uk]
8th July 2003, 14:10
i've just joined the forum after reading for a while, and after following some great recommendations here i thought it only fair to offer my own. i'm surprised i haven't seen any talk of it (and can't even find it in the search!)

if u like chilled, mellow beats with a touch of class you definitely HAVE to check out tosca! start with 'suzuki' and then try 'suzuki in dub' - a fantastic combo.

it's fairly popular stuff (tosca being one half of the fantastic kruder & dorfmeister) so i'm sure many here already have it, otherwise take my advice and give it a go- it's excellent.

Never heard of it

I've only one K&D album and hardly ever listen to it. Just didn't really seem to do anything for me at all. Not played it for a while so perhaps it's time to give it another go.

Hi

I have this on CD. Not bad. I'm have heard a track off Tosca's 'Chocolate Elvis'. It sounded very good on vinyl. But I understand that album is full of remixes of Chocolate Elvis.

They have done a few albums which may be worth a listen. Delhi 9 being the most recent one.

Tosca are Richard Dorfmeister & Rupert Huber.

Ive been meaning to get chocolate elvis.

Ive got peace orchestra and suzuki - and prefer peace orchestra - so if you like suzuki Id reccomend giving that one a try.

all the best
Hope u keep posting in the forum

funny, i have peace orchestra as well but never really got into it, tho i really love suzuki. i had a bit of trouble getting into to the simplistic sounds on peace orchestra

haven't got delhi 9, but it's on the list. i've never come across chocolate elvis, though i do have 'different tastes of honey' (mixes of honey from suzuki), which is very groovy indeed

nightmares on wax anyone? gotta love car boot soul...

Hi,

I'm interested in Nightmares on Wax. I have their first few 12" singles which they released on Warp in the late 80s.

I must admit I don't have many albums by them but I have heard most of them.

I liked Carboot Soul which is an interesting & involving album. I do have a copy of Mind Elavation which is not as good. It's patchy in parts but it does have it's moments.

I have Chocolate Elvis and it's great for the first few tracks then it's filler IMHO.. Peace Orchesta are pretty decent but if that's your stuff try Thievery Corporation.. The richest man in Babylon is superb as is Nightmares on Wax Smokers Delight and also another corker is Charles Webster..Born on the 24th of July

All IMHO just in case you don't like em...

sg[uk]
9th July 2003, 14:24
the other nightmares stuff i've got is worth a listen but not a touch on car boot soul imo. gonna swipe smokers delight off a mate asap as i've been told this is even better

jools, definitely thumbs up from me for thievery corp. richest man.. is top. listening to lebanese blonde now which i've never paid much attention to. will check out charles webster for sure

bent, bonobo, fila brazillia, quantic, lemon jelly and baby mammoth also come to mind if people are digging this kinda stuff. baby mammoth have a new one just out (octo muck??) but i haven't heard it or much about it

sg[uk]
9th July 2003, 14:49
never heard gotan project but will follow your advice (cheers for the tips!). i had motion by cinematic orchestra but never really liked it that much. i've heard their new album is absolute class tho?

bonobo and cinematic orchestra puts us into ninja tunes, this could go on forever ;)

cheers again for the tips, back to work for me

So much quality music being mentioned in one thread!

sg, there's a ninja tunes thread on here somewhere, may have sunk onto page two now (perhpas before you joined the forum), have a look in the deep dark archives!

I got "Delih9" by Tosca on the recommendation of a friend but haven't heard any of their other stuff. Delhi9 is pretty good - it's 2 CDs and the 2nd one is just some really laid back solo piano stuff - a bit odd but might be good if you were stoned :D

Will definitely have to check out "Suzuki"...

Kruder & Dorfmeister are excellent aswell. Haven't got much of their stuff though beyond the DJKicks collection they did. Also like Thievery Corporation aswell of course :) but haven't heard of all the others listed apart from Bent (got both albums).

sg[uk] - you have to check out Gotan Project (La Revancha del Tango), it's one of my faves at the moment - a wicked record.

Seems I really like the same kind of downtempo stuff as you (and joolsburger) - cool :respect:

So, for another recommendation in the same vein I'd suggest "Waltz for Koop" by Koop, excellent stuff aswell.

Michael.

another name into the mix.......

Manitoba. I've only got stuff on mp3 but have liked every track i've heard! MOst seem to be off the "up in flames album" Will definately be buying this soon!

I dont like it much, they use several tracks that are already on everyday, just remixed a bit. I kind of expect to hear new material when I buy a new album.

wow, so many like-minded people here

mo!: i did see part of the ninja thread before, i was pleased to see herbaliser come up a lot. i was lucky enough to catch the whole band live at essential last year and it's only made me like their stuff even more. 'shattered soul' live was proper wicked

michaelab: yeah the k&d dj kicks cd is fantastic, i've loved 'high noon' since i first heard it on that. i have k&d sessions (2 cd) which is pretty good in a chilled way and conversions which is a bit more uptempo. both have 'speechless drum and bass' - one of my all time faves. will get hold of some gotan project soon (2 recommendations now!), hope it lives up to your hype ;)

A friend copied waltz for koop for me, some of the tracks were a bit too much for me although i liked it, especially the title track

robbo: i haven't heard everyday or the new one so i wouldn't have known. hopefully i'll get to hear it soon...

Woohoo this is my kinda music. Check out this boy too Sola Rosa (http://www.smokecds.com/cd/32694?source=smoke_email_10jul03). Some very nice tunes.

K&D Sessions is absolute class. Quite a bit of the Thievery Corp is pretty good too. Tosca have a few great albums - Suzuki in Dub has to be my fave, obviously the "dubbed" version of Suzuki. Give the Different Tastes of Honey a miss IMO.

If you do like your dub check our Salmonella Dub too - plenty of great stuff from them around - here's just a sample Inside the Dub Plates (http://www.smokecds.com/cd/31867)

There's a new Cinematic Orchestra out too, something about a camera???? Anyone have that?

Enjoy - Jay

Waltz for Koop is a goodie I had forgotten about spent an evening yesterday getting into many of the stuff we havbe spoken of here decided that Lambs Debut album is another worth mentioning and on a slightly harder tip all the LTJ bukem stuff is interesting.. The Killer album at my house at the min is Desmond Williams.. Delights of the Garden very good indeed...

sg[uk]
10th July 2003, 12:22
jools don't even get me started on the ltj! i've been a massive fan of his (and the whole g.l.o) thing for ages. i've seen him spin with conrad more times than i can remember. was keeping drum and bass out of this thread till now!

can thoroughly recommend the new progression sessions (#8 live from the end), maybe not quite as good as the tokyo one but pretty damn good, as you'd expect.. i don't think i've ever heard a bad album from g.l.o

was listening to Earth 3 yesterday causes my LS3/5as a bit of heat but the AB1s really help with the basslines!!!!

Still though you gotta love Bukem... Although Big Bud seems to be the stuff I like best on GLR...

sg[uk]
10th July 2003, 12:45
haven't got earth 3, i have earth 1 but mainly go for the logical progression/prog sesh's for their party friendlyness ;)

big bud is great, i've got late night blues and infinity+infinity. i'm also really digging makoto who has his first album out soon/now? i downloaded the promo from slsk and it sounds pretty good. 'take my soul baby' is a lush tune, nobody can stay off the dancefloor for that one. still lovin ltjs essence remix as well.

i heard conrad is working on an artist album, should be interesting

what's that system u got jools? mine is pretty simple (yammy home cinema -> arcam alpha 8 power -> tannoy m3s) but sounds smooth and i'm happy with it (for now! external dac soon i think)

i can't believe how 'in tune' this board is! good stuff..

It's called dubut album so you cant go wrong!!!:MILD:

Goreki is a sublime track....

MO!
10th July 2003, 17:21
It's not really "chill out" Michael, though some bits really do sooooooth you. In the whole it's sort of D'n'B with complex beats, hooks and female vocals! Not the repetitive stuff that often puts people off D'n'B.

I had Goreki on 12" But seems to have gone walkies. I've got a double CD single of it though, which has some good remixes and B-Sides. Trans fatty acid K&D Remix!

Look out for the *hidden* track on the album if you get it Michael.

If I wasn't trying to keep my reviews A-Z this would have been in my first ones!

amazon have it HERE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001EOS/ref=sr_aps_music_1_1/026-6903527-1868452) with some samples.

I like D'n'B aswell MO! :D It's in the Amazon shopping basket...will wait till I have a few more CDs to add before I go through with the order (otherwise postage costs are too much).

Listened to the samples that Amazon have and it sounds like I'd like it. Now got to go back through the thread looking for some of the other stuff I hadn't heard of :)

Oh my God! I just listened to the samples on Amazon for LemonJelly's "LemonJelly.ky" and it went straight into the basket :D Wonder how I've never heard of them before  "Lost Horizons" also in the basket :)

But for another one that hasn't been mentioned: Blue States "Nothing Changes under the Sun" is excellent. They've got a new album out "Man Mountain" but I haven't heard it yet (in the basket now, why not :D ).

michael: ky is awesome, 'his majesty king raam' is one of my favourite sleepy time tunes. i've heard a bit about the blue states album but never listened to it, let us know how it is

i think dj shadow deserves a shout here, especially endtroducting

loadsa recommendations to check out, u gotta love it when there's too much stuff to get ;)

Yeah, but surely Michael has this already! I mean! It'd be criminal not to!!! Private Press is worthy of purchase too, but endtroducing is where to start!

For David Holmes, I've not got "Let's get killed". But shall be adding that soon. I got "Come get it I got it", and thought YAY!!! I'll have some MOre of that and so added "This Films crap let's slash the seats", "Bow down to the exit sign", and "Presents the free association".

They're all very good. "This film's...." is MOre a straight techno album, while the others see a MOre unique style. Excellent sampling, funk, punk, hip hop soooooooooooooul and great beats :D

Got Archive "Londinium" on at the min' too. Add that to the cart Michael! Quite dark, chillout trip hop sound. Some edgy female rolling vocals and some rapping on parts too. Hints of portishead.

Correctamundo MO! :D Hmm, would like you like to catalog my CDs for me

entroducing is the only DJ Shadow CD I have though but it's a corker. Mentioned it on the other thread where I was saying that I didn't think you could really call DJ Shadow "hip hop" ;)

On that subject, where does hip-hop end and this kind of music begin? I mean, they used to call Portishead "trip-hop" (is that term still used?). OK, so the basic beats and breaks are very similar (sometimes identical) to hip hop music but I really think it's something different alltogether.

btw MO! - I got aim's "hinterland" yesterday - wicked record! Thanks :) Will see what other stuff of their's is in the local HMV before I go back home to Portugal for another 2 weeks today  (where I doubt it's available).

Another one metioned elsewhere but not yet on this thread is Royksopp's "Melody AM". A really stoking record. A bit more upbeat than the rest mentioned here but if you like the stuff here, you're bound to like it aswell.

good to know you're all down with dj shadow, i imagined you would all have endtroducing but there could be a few lurkers who don't (if this is the case go and get it now!) - the new one is out now 'diminishing returns' - the first part is very hip hop and the second a bit more chilled with some old rock influences.

mo: i've heard free assosciation and really liked it, probably go for 'this films crap' first tho for a bit of a surprise

michael: without going too far into genre splitting i was thinking along the same lines recently. although the beats are generated in the same way, hip hop definitely has more edge in the rest of the music. an mc helps of course. bands like the herbaliser are really on the edge of this distinction in a lot of their tunes imo. what do you lot go for in terms of hip hop? i'm a big j5 fan but am listening to format and yoda a lot lately (anyone hear yoda's recent essential mix?)

i also picked up hinterland yesterday and on first listening it's top! i really enjoyed the mix of chill out, hip hop and even a few crunching basslines. one of the tracks really reminded me of stevie wonder / fingertips - not sure which one now, maybe i was imagining it

melody am was killed for me by too many bloody mobile adverts!

edit: oops 'diminishing returns' isn't out till next week, unless you have friends who are handy with cdrs that is!

Joolsburger
11th July 2003, 13:22
I find the sound quality on Melody FM is really poor although there are a couple of good tunes on it but yeah played to death on TV.

michaelab
11th July 2003, 13:37
Melody FM? Isn't that a cheesy radio station? I think the album's called Melody AM ;)

Yes - overused in ads, but I still like it. Same goes for Moby. Once "Play" was no longer flavour of the month for the ad guys it became nice to listen to again.

Michael.

MO!
11th July 2003, 13:46
Diminishing returns is already out I think. It's not cheap and doesn't seem readily available. Perhaps it's only imports i've seen? But i'm waiting to find it for a little less than the £20 I've seen it advertised for so far!!!

Michael, Aim has nothing to do with me sorry. I believe someone else reccomended them. I'll gladly take all future praise though :D

As for when does hip hop end and other forms begin......

I'd class Shadow as hip hop. Without an mc/rapper/vocalist, it is far MOre beat dependant. SCIDB wrote a great post on the thread over on GH IIRC. Mentioned "turntablist" I guess that's the area of hip hop Mr Shadow can be filed :P To me, the MOre confusing bit is, when is it hip hop, when is it rap? I tend to think of hip hop as a musical/beat description, and rap for when it's with mc. But then, what about hip hop with vocals? I tend to find myself refering to what I like as hip hop (vocal or not), and what I don't as rap. But, I do think it's MOre to do with the music side of things that defines what I refer to it as.

endtroducing is probably my fav' non *vocal* hip hop album, while Dr Octagons "Octagynacologyst" is probably my fav' *vocal* hip hop album.

Just got Kid Koalas "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" a week or two ago and he's very much in the turntablist camp! Shows some top cutting and scratching. Uses the scratch noises as an instrument in itself! Get's a nice saxaphone sound going! Got Krush "Code 4109" playing now. :D

For hip hop. I think they were just looking for a nother name :) It's still hip hop of a sort, but tends to be quite minimalist, dark, chill out at times. Obvious names, Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, and shock horror! Someone from outside bristol! Archive. I was playing Archives Londinium last night and it's a top top album.

I was just about to mention play in the same way! It did for a while become too big for it's own musical good. But shouldn't be forgot what a good album it is IMO

Michael, I think you melody AM thingy was over on GH. Remember I started a thread about people talking MOre about their kit than the music :D Forgot our previous Avalanches convo and you replied with a Melody am mini review IIRC

Oh yes, thought of another recommendation:

Goldfrapp "Felt Mountain". Wicked album with the most amazing vocals (Alison Goldfrapp) and wailing synth sounds. Their second album "Black Cherry" is about as different as it's possible to be - it's hard to tell it's the same band  Very 80's and rocky and absolutely nothing in common with the trippy first album. Not bad though, but not as good as "Felt Mountain".

MO! the night was ace cheers for asking! lavelle was fantastic tho it was weird when he started, there was only about 30 people scattered round the outside of the floor, he must've wondered why he was playing there ;) still it filled right up within 20 mins or so. The d&b was all in an outside marquee and is a little hazy now, woke up with very sore feet and a smile on my face so it must've been good ;)

never heard of nautilis (thought they were those crazy looking speakers), the review looks intriguing tho, let us know what u think when u get it

nice selection michael, that lot should keep you nice and chilled till the end of the summer, definitely gotta pick up a lamb album, i only have their stuff on comps

gotta get ready for a long hard weekend of hard hard nasty techno starting on the 1st in rome now!

Looks like a good selection to me Michael! Never heard Blue states though. You also have albums by LeMOn Jelly and Blue States called "Man MOuntain"..... a mistake or freaky coincidence?

What was your final selection Jools? If thay've arrived, any thought yet?

sg, everyone should own Lambs Debut album. The others are also good, but the debut one is where it's really at. It's up there (IMO) with likes of endtroducing, mezanine, leftism, worm hole, as essential "dance" albums!

You sound like a proper li'l party`ead! Rome sounds like it's going to be fun! Remember where you leave your head though :D
